About We Will Rock You

Written by Ben Elton as a tribute to the late Freddie Mercury, it is based on the idea of a world dominated by media and technology, where the current generation are controlled in thought and expression, where live music and creativity is a threat to an almighty marketing machine. Despite the premise of this being a dystopian future, it’s a reflection of society today and our dependence on the internet, influencers, celebrity and the battle for freedom of expression, individuality and creativity!

What are we looking for in a cast?

As a creative team, we’re looking for the best singers, actors and dancers that we can find. While there are several roles that don’t require performers to be a ‘triple threat’, we are  looking for people who are open to be engaged in all areas. You must have a stage age of at least 16 years old, and while talent is the primary consideration when casting, a high level of  commitment is essential. We expect our cast to have a positive attitude and mindset, committed to performance excellence with a strong desire to work collectively and ability to collaborate. In taking part in this production, our expectation is that our cast will be committed to rehearsals and promotional requirements, and that absences from these will need to be discussed and agreed upon by the Production Managers and Director. We are an  inclusive production team, and all ethnicities, builds, gender, sexuality, ages, neuro and  physically diverse people are welcome to audition.

What you need to show us at auditions

Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your audition time, allowing time for check-in and your individual preparation.

We do not expect all singers to be strong dancers, but we do need to understand how you move, and your ability to retain movement instruction. We also do not expect all dancers to be strong singers, but we do need to see where you are musically to be able to place you in a full company.

Please prepare a 2 min maximum song excerpt from any classic rock artist from the 70s through to the 90s. You are welcome to perform a song from the show of the specific character you’re auditioning for, or any other Queen song.

If you require accompaniment, please indicate on your audition form and then please bring sheet music for your own selection song, in the key and version that you are performing, with cuts clearly marked (no chord charts), at your audition time. As a standard, we will have a Bluetooth capable speaker available for backing tracks (without vocals) – please feel free to bring your own to connect to should you wish. We are not looking to replicate the sound of Freddie Mercury or Queen. Please show your own natural vocal sound.

For the movement/dance part of auditions, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for high energy movement that is comfortable and will allow you to move freely.

Please be prepared to do a selected reading from the script if you’re auditioning for one of the lead roles.

Auditions may be videoed for reference during the casting process. Short extracts from  successful audition videos may be used for marketing purposes but will otherwise be deleted.

Please be prepared for callbacks but note that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re guaranteed a role. Likewise, you may be cast in a role without being called back in.
